If you think Intel dominates the microprocessor market, think again. Intel chips are not the brain of the biggest chunk of smartphones and tablets today.

Instead, chips designed by ARM, a British microprocessor company rarely heard of are running the show in as much as 95% of the mobiles and tablets around the world including the recently released iPad released this week. Overall, chips of ARM take the 30% market share around the world, which makes it nearly double the more popular Intel’s 16%. The numbers were released by HIS iSuppli.

But ARM is not contented. It wants to double its world market share to 60%, according to ARM’s CEO Warren East in an interview last week at Mobile World Congress.

ARMs rise was due to its unique position in the chip industry. The company does not manufacture the microprocessors itself. ARM designs and licenses different architectures to more than 300 companies throughout the world including Giant mobile makers and chip makers like Samsung, Texas Instruments (TI), Nvidia (NVDA), and Qualcomm.

However, the company’s current fortune can mainly be attributed to luck because it started at the right place at the right time.

ARM started out in 1991 by designing chips for modems of phones. The chips themselves were designed initially for one narrow niche of providing a capability for phones to communicate to cellphone towers without consuming much of the phone’s battery. As the century was about to end, cellphone manufacturers noticed that ARM chips had excess power left that could be used to build a user interface.

Thus, “feature phones” were born, the precursors of the modern smartphones. Soon ARM took advantage of the discovery and started designing chips for two purposes: to provide the same old capability for the modem processor and a processor for applications that could control the interface for iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry OS, Android, and other similar technologies.

ARM chips also found their way into other gadgets as demands increased. Today ARM chips are integrated into priinters, disk drives, cars, microprocessors, Internet-linked TVs, and tablets. Hewlett-Packard has started making its first server running on chips based on ARM technology; while Microsoft will release a version of Windows 8 designed to run on ARM chips.

This makes the share of ARM in the world’s chip consumption swell to almost double in a matter of three years. The popularity of tablets and smartphones will continue to bring the success of ARM’s chips to new heights, which will make the current world market share of ARM double again in about three years.

Intel, the semiconductor giant has tried and failed to gain a foothold in the mobile marketplace as ARM’s 21-year expertise proved decisive.

To counter the threat from ARM, Intel has started connecting with to some handset makers by convincing them that its chips can run nicely on mobiles. Indian carrier Lava and global telecom giant Orange announced a week ago that mobile phones playing Intel chips were in the drawing boards. Lenovo has launched its own version of mobile phones with Intel chips inside. Other telecom giants including the Chinese giant ZTE, Motorola Mobility (MMI) are also planning on shipping oiut phones with Intel chips.

ARM is not fazed however by Intel’s deep pockets and resurgence. ARM CEO is confident that its technoly will become the choice of smartphone and tablet makers around the world in the next few years.
